Within the US, I have given talks in 34 states.

 

Demetrios has been a mainstage speaker at the TED Conference (2007) and given presentations to companies such as Nike, Coca-Cola, Herman Miller, Starbucks, IBM Spain, IBM, Vitra, Ford, and others.

 Professional Experiences

 

Filmmaker/Mediamaker (1982 to present)

     For over 30 years, Demetrios has made films and videos ranging from 2 minutes to 2 hours long.  The ones in the project list below are ones he had creative control and considers part of his body of work as an artist.  In the late ‘80s, he made a small number of industrials he considered to be of little importance, though they developed skills.  In general, he was the director, cameraman, producer and writer on all the films indicated below.  He was often the editor as well, not so often on the recent work.  Altogether, Demetrios has made about 90 films of various lengths.

 

Director, Eames Office (1991 to Present)

     Longest continuous business endeavor has been running the team at the Eames Office as we communicate, preserve and extend the work of Charles and Ray Eames.

     Achievements include:

* numerous design educational initiatives, introducing a new generation
  to the ideas behind the famous objects

* an exhibition co-ordinated by the Library of Congress and the Vitra

Design Museum that traveled for 9 years to 3 continents.  This is different than the Exhibitions listed above

          * working with the manufacturers in a hands-on way to ensure the

  authenticity of the Eames furniture designs

          * organizing and designing a traveling, site-specific exhibition based

  on the Powers of Ten concept.  10 venues on 4 continents.

          * restoring and reissuing the Eames films on video and DVD

          * preserving the Eames House for future generations

          * licensing of numerous quality products.

          * contributions to numerous books and other publications

Description: A documentary about a series of projects by the students of the Rural Studio, founded by Sambo Mockbee and D.K.Ruth, in rural Alabama.  Though all the projects of the class of 2002 are glimpsed, the focus of this film is the building Lucy's House, made primarily of recycled carpet.

Centurions: An Oral History of the 20th Century (2000)

Description: An oral history of the twentieth century told by interviewing 8 people born around the year 1900.  4 from England; 4 from America.  The installation consisted of a huge timeline around the perimeter of the room and kiosks and screens in the interior. Lots of fascinating ephemera on the walls--even a jukebox.  The timeline tracked US events, world events, UK events, Sunderland (the venue site) events and personal events.
 

77 steps (2000)

Description: Shows the process of creating the Emeco chair--the famous navy chair you see so many places (like the interrogation room on CSI). The 77 step process converts raw aluminum into an American classic: the 1006 chair by Emeco.

Powers of Ten Interactive (1999)

Description: An interactive essay on scale based on the classic film Powers of Ten.  Basically a history of human curiosity sorted by scale, it had over 1000 images, 2 hours of video, and 3500 pages of text, most created by Demetrios.

[Translated into Japanese and German, this received worldwide distribution.]

Description: A Traveling, Site Specific Exhibition that teaches about scale.  Based on the premise that scale is the new geography, this exhibit is customized to the local community, helping visitors connect the ideas of the exhibition with their own experience.  It also included a Kids Powers of Ten component.

Description: Charles and Ray Eames moved to California in 1941. From 1943 until Ray’s death in 1988, the Eames Office was located at 901 Washington Boulevard in Venice, CA. This film is a document of the space at 901 Washington and a record of its closing after Ray’s death. It uses 901 as a prism to examine the richness of the Eames’ life and work

Description: 10 short stories that all take place in the same neighborhood in San Francisco. One is about a guy who talks to his dog; another about a woman who goes into a fallout shelter just before allout nuclear war and comes out 10 years later--and there's been no war.  Another is about a female film director named Eames Demetrios who shoots her lover rather than have him see the film she made about picking him up.
